Mitzvah Mensch

On Christmas morning, Big Bro and Dad participated in Community Mitzvah Day 2007. After a quick breakfast and game of Pittsburgh-Jewish geography with a nice Israeli family at the J, it was time to walk over to NCJW to pack emergency bags for children taken by social services from dangerous home situations and placed into foster care.

On learning that kids sometimes have to leave home quickly and might not be able to get their things for a few days, Big Bro showed a pretty advanced grasp on the situation for a four year old. "They need the coloring book for something to do until they can get their things."

Each bag was packed with care, with every required item including a meticulously selected toothbrush (yellow, whenever possible) and thoughtfully chosen toy (most stuffed animals are cool, but what Pittsburgh kid really wants at Brett Favre magnet or Raiders hat?!) As the activity got repetitive and enthusiasm waned, Big Bro dutifully got right back in line to keep going until the job was done.

All morning Big Bro was looking forward to spending a wonderful afternoon full of food and family (and gifts from Auntie S!) at G&Gs. This made Dad particularly proud of how engaged in the work - and aware of the mitzvah - he was. What a mensch!

Check out this article from the Trib with a nice quote from our very own Big Bro:

Volunteers of all ages get involved for Mitzvah Day

ready or not, here I come!

Taking advantage of a warm afternoon, little man gets a rare outing to watch big bro battle mom and dad in a monumental match of hide and seek at the playground.

say ahhhh.........

Today was the little man's one month checkup. Got a clean bill of health from the doctor, measuring in at 21 inches long, 9 lbs 13 oz. Best of all, a no-shot visit! Same can't be said of big brother, who tagged along for a flu shot. Fortunately, a crayon band aid, pretzel stick, sticker and lollipop helped the patient overcome the trauma and begin the healing process.

The outing was capped off with lunch at the square, the first Donner outing with a table for four. Ah, square java!
